The best (or at least what I think is worthy of cross-posting!) political news and policy views from my blog delivered here! Enjoy. :-p

Hey, kids. Jennifer Lopez (no, not that one!) from OFA Nevada just dropped me a reminder about this weekend.

This Saturday, OFA Nevada and the Nevada State Democratic Party would like to invite you to a house meeting with a special guest, Senator Harry Reid, who will join us via conference call.

Senator Reid has been a crucial ally of President Obama -- championing health insurance reform and fighting to rein in the big banks on Wall Street.

There are even bigger battles ahead, and we need to make sure we send Harry Reid back to Washington, to keep fighting for Nevadans.

These house meetings will be the first step to get engaged locally and get trained to make a difference -- can you make it to one near you?

Click here to find and RSVP for a house meeting with Senator Reid in your neighborhood.

I hope you can join us. This is a unique opportunity to get educated and involved -- and to hear directly from Senator Reid.

(Also at Nevada Progressive. Honestly, I've been on a bit of a sanity break/hiatus from political blogging for the last few days. However, I couldn't help myself on this one. I wanted to share it with y'all.) :-)

@joycewoodhouse talking about going from educator to ed cmte ... on Twitpic

On Saturday my State Senator, Joyce Woodhouse (D-Henderson), took some time out of her busy weekend to head over to Silver Springs Recreation Center in Henderson (and just a short walk from my house!) to chat with us neighbors about clean energy, green collar jobs, and other Nevada issues we're concerned about.

And since you already know how hard it is for me to keep my mouth shut, you know I had some questions ready.   Read More »

A couple days after I spoke with Paul Murad on why he wants to be Nevada's next Lieutenant Governor, I had a chance to chat with another of the Democrats running, Jessica Sferrazza. Jessica currently serves on the Reno City Council... And in fact, she's the only Democrat on the council. However, that hasn't stopped her from making some major accomplishments up north, and we were able to talk about this and why she thinks this experience has prepared her best for the job of Lieutenant Governor.   Read More »

Ah, the teabaggers were out yesterday... And they were angry! Over what, exactly? That's a good question.   Read More »

Over the weekend, I had a chance to chat with Paul Murad, one of the Democrats running to replace scandalicious GOoPer hot mess Brian "Krooklicki". I know we've seen him before at a number of Democratic club meetings and campaign events, but I had a chance to dig a little deeper and ask some more on the questions on my mind... And I hope, find answers to what you've been thinking and asking.   Read More »

Phew! Wasn't yesterday something? I was on a whirlwind... At some times, LITERALLY! (I really was close to being blown off the sidewalk during the heavy winds yesterday morning in Searchlight.)

We saw plenty of talk, plenty of pomp and circumstance, plenty of sloganeering, and plenty of raw politicking at the "Showdown in Searchlight"... And later that evening at the Clark County Democrats' Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Las Vegas. I'll get to the fun stuff at The JJ Dinner later, as I just want to offer my take today on yesterday's events in Searchlight.   Read More »

Finally! Democrats got 217 votes. We're still waiting on a few stragglers, but history is being made NOW!

And now, the final tally is 219 Ayes, 212 Nays. The margin was close, but the Senate health care reform bill has passed and is on its way to President Obama for his signature. This is the first major progressive policy achievement since The Great Society & The New Deal. For nearly 100 years we couldn't fix our broken health care system...

But now, we're on our way.

YES. WE. CAN.

YES. WE. DID!

:-D

It's pretty much confirmed. MSNBC just reported that infamous anti-choice holdout Bart Stupak will vote for the health care reform package, and he will urge the 6 other Reps remaining in "The Stupak Bloc" to do the same.

When Ohio Democrat and Stupak ally Marci Kaptur turned "Aye", things were really looking up. But now with Stupak on board, the health care bills today should pass with at least 216 votes.

Stay tuned here for more as I'll be watching the House all day today...

Hey, it's not like I enjoy proclaiming it all the time over here. But every once in a while, I must admit it can be a little satisfying to see a Brookings Institution study and Sun story confirm what I've been saying for some time now.   Read More »

OK, so you've been hearing me talk lately about Las Vegas Sands eyeing Florida for new casino resorts as it expands Sands Behthlehem in Pennsylavania and Wynn Resorts jumps into Pennsylvania with a new Philadelphia casino. And of course, we've been hearing constantly about all of our big casino companies flocking to Macau to cash in on the Asian gambling bonanza...

So why aren't we seeing this here in Las Vegas? That's a good question, and one that today's Sun ponders. Why was Harrah's rushing to buy PHo, but not to build a new casino? Why is Wynn rushing to build the Switch Beach Club at Encore, but not move on what had been its plan to build more hotel towers on what's now the golf course?   Read More »

So where was I? Oh yes, we were talking about the SNWA Water Grab when we had to leave yesterday. Let's pick it up from there.   Read More »
(Also at Nevada Progressive. I wrote this at my blog last week, but I think the serious issues facing Lake Las Vegas still stand. We must still ask ourselves how this fits into our hopes for a more sustainable Southern Nevada.)

Today's Sun has a blistering story on the disasters now plaguing the once grand and luxurious Lake Las Vegas. It's hard to imagine that anyone was imagining this for the synthetic "lakeside village".   Read More »
OK, I know I've been keeping you waiting for almost a week now. Sorry about that. As you can tell, I've been super busy! Yes, yes, and I took Thursday off.

Again, sorry about that. But hey, now we get to talk about the Clark County Commission! Many thanks to the Henderson Democratic Club for hosting this event last week and giving us a chance to get to know David Parks, Greg Esposito, Mary Beth Scow, and Ron Newell.   Read More »

Harry Reid's in.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid officially filed today to keep his Senate seat.

“While we have made significant progress through the Recovery Act and other measures to prevent this recession from becoming a depression, there is much work to be done. We must never forget our fellow Nevadans who are suffering during this economic downturn," Reid said. "That is why I filed for re-election today."

Reid is being challenged by Republican front-runners Danny Tarkanian, a lawyer and former UNLV basketball star, and Sue Lowden, a former state senator and one-time chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party.

Reid said his goals during another term in office would be diversifying the state's economy and making health care more affordable.

“I will spend the next seven months sharing that vision with the people of Nevada," he said. "I hope they will support my re-election so that I can continue fighting to get Nevada moving again."

Now as usual, we're hearing all the typical premature obituaries. Yeah, yeah, yeah, "Reid is dead". Uh huh. That's why the unions are getting ready for a BIG campaign to help Harry Reid and reveal the real Suzy Lowdown.   Read More »
